PE

Curriculum Intent

At Ponsbourne St. Marys, we recognise the importance of PE and the role it has in promoting a healthy lifestyle. The intent of our PE curriculum is to ensure that all children receive high quality PE and develop skills and understanding, so that they can perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities. We strive to inspire our children through engaging, fun and enjoyable lessons that are challenging and accessible for all. At Ponsbourne, we intend to provide our children with the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and equipping them with the necessary tools to achieve in our school and beyond. Through our teaching of PE, we will provide opportunities for children to develop transferrable skills such as fairness, respect and good sporting attitudes. It is our intention to engage children and provide them with opportunities to develop a passion for sporting activities, lead a healthy lifestyle and gain lifelong skills.

Curriculum Implementation

Our PE curriculum teaches the aims outlined in the National Curriculum. We aim to engage children in friendly and competitive sports through organised games with the Hertford and Ware School Sports Partnership. At Ponsbourne, we offer opportunities for children to take part in a broad range of activities such as the daily mile, in house competitions and swimming lessons. Some of our PE lessons are provided by an external agency PSKA who also train our staff to ensure that all lessons are delivered to a high standard. Children have a variety of opportunities to take part in dance, including many shows and our May Fayre.

We teach lessons so that children:

- Have fun and experience success in sport

- Develop good sporting attitudes

- Experience positive competition

- Learn how to lead active lives

- Develop competence and resilience

School Games

We have been awarded the School Games Gold Award in recognition:

– of our school’s provision for pupils to engage in 2 hours of sporting activities per week;

– that we engage 20% of pupils in extra curricular sport;

– that we provide appropriate competition level (through inter school activities);

– that 5% of children lead and officiate school games.
